Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about Human Mark certification, verification, AI usage, and the public registry.

Do I submit my work before paying?

No. You complete checkout first, then you will be prompted to fill out a certification form for your work.

If approved, certification is typically issued within 7 business days. Rejections may be appealed.

What types of AI use are permitted?

Non-generative AI tools may be used for editing, formatting, cleanup, mixing, mastering, and technical preparation.

Generative AI is not permitted to create the work itself or any primary creative elements.

Can Human Mark guarantee that generative AI was not used?

No. Human Mark provides a good-faith verification process based on creator declarations and review, not absolute guarantees.

How does verification work?

We may review supporting materials such as drafts, RAW files, metadata, or project files alongside a signed declaration.

Do certifications expire?

Individual certifications do not expire, but misuse or misrepresentation may result in revocation.

How can you determine if generative AI was used?

Human Mark uses a documentation-based review approach. There is no single test that can prove AI was never used, so we evaluate evidence of human process combined with a binding declaration.

  • Creation files: RAW photo files, layered design files (PSD/AI), DAW sessions (music), project timelines (video), manuscript drafts (writing)
  • Revision history: edit trails, version exports, timestamps, and iterative work products that show progression over time
  • Metadata & technical consistency: capture data, export history, and coherence checks (when applicable)
  • Source materials: sketches, contact sheets, reference shots, session notes, stems, proof pages, or production logs
  • Follow-up questions: targeted questions about tools, workflow, and timeline to confirm provenance

This is a good-faith verification process. We look for a coherent, documentable chain of authorship rather than relying on automated “AI detectors,” which can be unreliable and can change over time.

Why is Human Mark’s verification documentation-based?

Human Mark is designed to create meaningful provenance—not just a badge. That means the record is supported by originals, process evidence, and consistent documentation, so the certification remains credible over time.

  • Original files matter: source files (RAW, sessions, drafts) carry more meaning than final exports alone
  • Process is visible: intermediate versions and revision trails show real human progression
  • Corroboration strengthens trust: multiple independent pieces of evidence reinforce authenticity
  • Accountability is built in: creators sign a binding statement regarding generative AI use

The result is a record that is intended to be useful to audiences, collectors, labels, publishers, and institutions that value durable authorship and verifiable origin.

Do you use AI detection tools?

We may use technical checks as a supporting signal, but Human Mark does not rely on automated “AI detectors” as the deciding factor. The core of verification is documentation, consistency, and accountable declaration.

What happens if someone is caught misrepresenting their work?

If we learn that a certified work was generated (in whole or in part) using generative AI in violation of the declaration, the certification may be revoked and the public verification record may be updated to reflect that status.

What should I save during creation to make verification easy?
  • Keep originals: RAW captures, source recordings, manuscript drafts, project files
  • Export versions: dated progress exports or snapshots as the work evolves
  • Maintain revision trails: track changes, version history, or edit logs
  • Document workflow: brief notes on tools used and major steps (especially for complex works)

If you can show “how it was made,” verification becomes straightforward.

Why is Human Mark valuable to me as an artist?

Human Mark provides an additional layer of protection and clarity for your work in an era where large language models and generative systems increasingly scrape, ingest, and repurpose online content.

When you certify a work, Human Mark creates a public, time-stamped record of human authorship — documenting who created the work, when it was created, and under what declared conditions. This record establishes provenance and intent in a way that travels with the work over time.

While no label or registry can fully prevent scraping on today’s internet, Human Mark acts as a clear signal of human authorship and declared non-generative origin. If your work is misused, misattributed, or ingested without permission, this record helps strengthen your position by providing evidence that the work was created by a human and publicly claimed as such at a specific point in time.

Human Mark does not replace copyright. Instead, it complements existing copyright protections in the most legally sound way possible — through documentation, disclosure, and verifiable records rather than unprovable claims. This approach protects artists while also preserving the credibility and integrity of the Human Mark registry.

  • Creates documented provenance tied to your name and work
  • Signals human authorship and declared non-generative origin
  • Provides supporting evidence if disputes or misuse arise
  • Preserves attribution and context as creative tools evolve

At its core, Human Mark is about visibility, accountability, and long-term authorship — ensuring human-made work remains identifiable, attributable, and meaningfully human over time.
